Have you mastered how to use personal pronouns correctly in the previous lesson? Let’s challenge yourself with more pronouns, this time, demonstrative pronouns. This is extremely helpful when it comes to daily conversations. 

Demonstrative pronouns are pronouns that are used to replace a noun that can be understood from the context of a sentence. Usually, demonstrative pronouns always come before nouns to make them more specific.

Vietnamese pronouns

1. Đây/Này (This/These)

Đây/Này are pronouns that are used to talk about objects or people that are in close distance to the speaker. How these two pronouns are used are slightly different.
Đây là + noun. (This is + noun)
Noun + này. (This + noun)

For example:
Đây là điện thoại của tôi.
Anh này là sếp của tôi.

In plural form, these are demonstrated by adding “những” or “các” before the noun, following this structure.
Đây là + những/các + noun.
Những/Các + noun + này.

For example:
Đây là những cái cây mà tôi đã trồng.
Các bạn này giỏi lắm.

2. Đấy/Đó/Kia (That/Those)

For objects or people that are far away from the speaker, three pronouns Đấy, Đó and Kia are used to demonstrate that. 

Similar to the above structure, for singular noun, we follow the formula:
Đấy/Đó/Kia là + noun. (That is + noun)
Noun + đấy/đó/kia. (That + noun).

For example: 
Kia là cái ghế của ông chị. (That is my grandfather’s chair) 
Em không được chạm vào cái bát này. (You cannot touch this bowl)

With plural forms, the structure is simply follow as:
Đấy/Đó/Kia là + những/các + noun. (Those are + noun)
Những + noun + đấy/đó/kia. (Those + noun)

For example:
Đó là những cuốn sách của tớ. (Those are my books)
Những bức tranh kia rất đặc biệt với cô ấy. (Those pictures are special to her.)
